We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted more than 9.7 million children by constructing more than 1,700 schools, establishing more than 17,500 libraries, publishing 1150 new children’s book titles in 27 local languages, and reaching more than 31,000 girls through our Girls’ Education program.

Position Overview:

The roles and responsibilities of this position are broad and operational, as well as tactical. They include supporting the Director HR, Asia in developing, implementing, evaluating, and recommending changes to Room to Read's Asia Human Resources goals, functions, policies, procedures, and programs, with respect to our organization's global goals and policies.  The person supports, provides inputs on best practice guidance in all HR functional areas including; employee relations, recruitment, performance management, training and development, benefits, compensation and organizational development. The person works closely with Global Office Asia and San Francisco and country office staff to ensure consistent Human Resources practices. International travel may be required throughout the Asia region. The position reports to the Director HR, Asia and is based in New Delhi, India.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  •     Support the Director HR Asia in development and delivery of highly competitive services that anticipate and meet the needs of the organization.
  •     Collaborate with HR Managers and Country Directors, of assigned countries to implement and manage organizational development efforts at the country level.
  •     Support in the hiring process of key employees in the Asia region, including assisting in handling negotiations & finalizing offers to new recruits.
  •     Manage and enhance the performance management and improvement system and coach CO teams and line managers of assigned countries in managing performance issues.
  •     Support the creation, implementation, and coordination of staff training and development programs in Country Offices.
  •     Manage the administration of various employee benefit programs for Global Office employees in Asia.
  •     Maintain, recommend changes to, update and publish the Asia in-country employee handbooks as needed.
  •     Support in preparing Human Resources/personnel budget, manage expenditures, and report on variances to budget.
  •     Support in conducting employee satisfaction surveys and contribute to the design and implementation of action plans based on the survey results.
  •     Ensure organization compliance with all applicable national country labor laws and regulations, working closely with the Director HR Asia.
  •     Support the HR Managers of the assigned country offices to manage staff complaints and issues as well as undertake investigations where required.
  •     Coordinate and maintain other company insurance such as Health & Liability Insurance.
  •     Support in establishing new country offices and train staff with respect to all HR related functions, policies, and procedures.
  •     Providing support to HR Managers in working effectively on HRMS.
  •     Consult with outside legal counsel or other experts, as appropriate
  •     Assist in formulation and implementation of HR Audit Strategies/ Checklists
  •     Become fully conversant with Human Resources Long Term Plan (HRLRP) and assist in its implementation in Global Office Asia and Country Offices in Asia.
  •     Assist in “Capacity Assessment” of staff as and when required.
  •     Provide guidance and support to staff in implementation of “Staffing Models”.
  •     Assist in implementation of key organizational priorities as appropriate.  
  •     Function as a valued HR business partner to the Asia GO and CO teams to advance Room to Read’s vision, mission and goals.

  •     Master's degree with minimum of six to eight years of professional Human Resources experience in a managerial position, preferably in the development sector.
  •     General knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel administration.
  •     Generalist HR background preferably developed through various specialist assignments.  The most important of which would be: employee training and development, organization development, HR administration, compensation, recruiting and compliance.
  •     Demonstrated a strategic approach to HR with the ability and willingness to also execute the tactical elements of the job.
  •     Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written) and capability to relate and interact with multicultural teams and represent the organization in professional forums
  •     Strong non-profit background either professionally or via personal non-profit volunteering efforts.
  •     Strong planning, supervisory, and management skills.
